2022 Summer Camp

Program Guide

Camp Asbury’s Director Introduction for Summer 2022

One of my favorite things about living and working at Camp Asbury year-round, is experiencing the beauty of camp in all four seasons.  The pop of color on the trees in the fall, and the sparkle of the lake in the October sun. Looking out over the field when it’s covered in a blanket of fresh snow. Watching the waterfalls freeze and then slowly thaw and come back to life in early spring. Walking through the woods as it blooms into a green and luscious forest. Catching the glimpse of a rainbow after a summer thunderstorm, and seeing fireflies glow under the multitude of stars on a late night in June. No matter the season, God’s creation is at work around us, and it’s our job to open our eyes and ears to the beauty we’re provided.

Camp Asbury staff is excited to provide another season of summer camp this year! The theme for Summer 2022 is “Creation Speaks.” This summer, we will explore the ways that Jesus used creation to teach God’s love. Whether it be through light, water, earth, animals, or the changing of the seasons themselves, God’s handiwork will be celebrated and experienced firsthand at camp.

Just as we adjust to the changing of seasons each fall, winter, spring and summer, so must we adjust to the “new normal” that comes with the Covid 19 pandemic. Camp Asbury will continue to operate summer camp with protocols in place that aim to keep campers and staff safe and healthy. We are grateful to be able to provide an outdoor sanctuary where kids can laugh, play, learn, and grow in God’s creation.

Another fun summer at Camp Asbury is right around the corner! We can’t wait to welcome you here!

Sammi Vaughan, Camp Asbury Interim Director

Camp Asbury—Summer 2022

Every Camp Asbury residential program is built on an age-appropriate selection of classic camp activities. These classic activities are continually given creative twists by Asbury staff. Some activities every week are selected by camper choice.

The heart of Camp Asbury’s program is small group community experienced with peers of similar age-level. Campers live and participate in camp activities as co-ed family groups. A family group usually consists of the combination of a boys’ cabin and a girls’ cabin or, by age level registrations. In summer 2022, a small group will consist of up to 8 campers with a male and female counselor. Each small group will be as much as possible, an isolated cohort, for the week of camp. Small groupde-centralized, residential camping is adaptable to CDC recommendations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a church-related camp, faith formation is a core component of all Camp Asbury’s programs. Each small group engages in a daily interactive Bible study guided by its counselors. Daily Bible study explores the theme “Creation Speaks.” We will be sharing stories and activities that teach us how Jesus uses different elements of creation, such as water, light, soil, animals, and seasons, to show God’s love for us.  In addition to Bible study, there are also a number of opportunities for the entire camp community to share in the worship of God outdoors as a large group.

To add spice and variety to a week of resident camp, Asbury adds a weekly theme. No two weeks of summer are alike. Campers in all overnight programs participate in the camp-wide special themed activities of the week. Weekly themes enhance, but do not dominate, a camper’s experience. An introduction to 2022 weekly themes follows Asbury’s program descriptions.

Leadership development is the focus of Camp Asbury’s high school programming. Mentoring younger campers, servant-style leadership, outdoor living skills and group facilitation skills are highlighted. Asbury’s senior high programs are designed to help campers grow in self-knowledge, courage, confidence and resiliency. Joining Camp Asbury’s favorite programs of Night Owls and Up to the Challenge are three new camps for Summer 2022: Taste of the TipisPicture This, and Take the Reins

Horse program:  Camp Asbury partners with Sand Hill Stable in Mantua, Ohio. For Summer 2022 Camp Asbury offers Beginner (2 stable visits per week) and Beginner II (5 stable visits per week) instruction for grades 4-7. Camp Asbury also offers a farm experience (2 stable visits with optional riding) for grades 1-4. New for Summer 2022: Intermediate riding instruction for grades 6-12 (5 stable visits per week with extended hours).  Customized instruction is available at the stable for riders who demonstrate a higher skill level. Horse programs operate during five weeks of Camp Asbury’s summer program. Camp Asbury provides transportation to stable sessions. At the stable, learn to ride, control and groom a horse. Horse program campers are asked to describe their riding experience and skill on Asbury’s “Get Acquainted” form. Each camper’s horseback ability will be confirmed by Sand Hill Stable instructors and their stable experience tailored to their ability.

Alumni:  Whether you’re a former camper or an Asbury Summer Staff alum, Camp Asbury values its ongoing connection with you. You and your family are invited to share new experiences and create fresh memories at Camp Asbury. Check out Family Weekend, August  12-14, 2022 at the end of this brochure. Camp Asbury also welcomes staff alumni, trained as counselors within the last three years, to work as trained summer volunteers. Volunteers will receive special orientation to the ways Camp Asbury programs are operating differently during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tiered Pricing

What is Tiered Pricing?

Tiered Pricing is a personal pricing system that many summer camps across the country are now using. East Ohio Camps does careful cost analysis and works hard to keep fee increases to a minimum, while at the same time the costs to run a high-quality summer camp continue to increase.

East Ohio Camps knows and understands that families have different abilities to pay for a Christian camping experience, and that you know your family’s financial situation better than we do. This allows you to choose the rate that best fits your financial situation. The pricing option you choose remains confidential and in no way influences the experience your camper receives. Your camper receives the same quality camp experience no matter which rate you choose.

  • Tier 1 is the rate we are able to offer thanks to the contributions of the East Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church and other generous donors.
  • Tier 2 is a partially-supported rate for those who can pay more than the Tier 1 rate.
  • Tier 3 is a rate that more closely reflects the true cost of the camp experience.

What happens when you pay the Tier 2 or Tier 3 rate? You take an active role in supporting the true cost of their child’s camp experience, which enables us to redirect the contributions from our generous donors to support other areas of need in the camping ministry, including program, staffing and facility upgrades.

Please remember that in addition to these rates, additional financial assistance is available to ensure that all children have the opportunity to attend camp.

  • You can pay in multiple payments. Call the East Ohio Camps office at 1 (800) 831-3972 ext. 108 to arrange a payment plan that works for your family.
  • Take advantage of the sibling discount if more than one child from your family is attending camp. Contact the camp office at 1 (800) 831-3972 ext. 108 or email: camp@eocumc.com.
  • East Ohio Camps has Campership funds available. Contact Gary Jones at 1 (800) 831-3972 ext. 120 for an application.
  • Your church may be able to help pay part of the cost. Check with your Camp Contact Person or your Pastor for details.
  • Your district may have Campership Funds available. Check with your District Office for details.
