2023 Summer Camp

Program Guide

Camp Asbury’s Director Introduction for Summer 2023

When we ask campers to reflect on their week at Camp Asbury, many of them talk about how they learned something new at camp. They learned to shoot a bow and arrow, how to take a fish off a hook after making their first catch, how to read a trail blaze, how to throw pottery on a wheel, and so much more! Camp is a place to play new games, to try new foods, create new friendships, and to grow into a new person. With 450 acres of property to explore, Camp Asbury provides the perfect outdoor classroom to learn about the natural world that we are immersed in. But who will teach us?

For Summer 2023, our theme is “All Creatures Great and Small,” where we explore the idea of animals as teachers! Camp Asbury is home to a variety of animals that campers may not get to see anywhere else! Bats and bumblebees, squirrels and salamanders, turtles and turkeys, and so many more critters are waiting to be discovered in the summer! Through daily Bible studies centering around the themes of trust, transformation, compassion, perseverance, and community, the animals in the fields and forests around us will help to teach God’s word. We were placed on the earth to help care for creation and live in community with the creatures around us, and there is no better place than Camp Asbury to live out this mission.

Summer 2023 also brings the return of our Friday closing picnic! Families are welcome to join in a picnic dinner and watch their campers perform in a closing presentation with their small group! We are excited to bring families back for this event, and to continue to widen our camp community after a few years of Covid restrictions. Our staff is hard at work preparing another summer of fun and fellowship for new and returning campers alike! We hope that you make camp part of your story this summer!

Sammi Riggs, Camp Asbury Director

Camp Asbury—Summer 2023

Every Camp Asbury residential program is built on an age-appropriate selection of classic camp activities. These classic activities are continually given creative twists by Asbury staff. Some activities every week are selected by camper choice.

The heart of Camp Asbury’s program is small group community experienced with peers of similar age-level. Campers live and participate in camp activities as co-ed family groups. A family group usually consists of the combination of a boys’ cabin and a girls’ cabin or, by age level registrations. In summer 2023, a small group will consist of up to 12 campers with a male and female counselor.

As a church-related camp, faith formation is a core component of all Camp Asbury’s programs. Each small group engages in a daily interactive Bible study guided by its counselors. Daily Bible study explores the theme “All Creatures Great and Small.” Through this theme, we will view animals at camp as teachers! Campers will learn what the bugs, birds, and mammals at Asbury can teach us about trust, transformation, perseverance, compassion and community.   In addition to Bible study, there are also a number of opportunities for the entire camp community to share in the worship of God outdoors as a large group.

To add spice and variety to a week of resident camp, Asbury adds a weekly theme. No two weeks of summer are alike. Campers in all overnight programs participate in the camp-wide special themed activities of the week. Weekly themes enhance, but do not dominate, a camper’s experience. An introduction to 2023 weekly themes follows Asbury’s program descriptions.

Leadership development is the focus of Camp Asbury’s high school programming. Mentoring younger campers, servant-style leadership, outdoor living skills and group facilitation skills are highlighted. Asbury’s senior high programs are designed to help campers grow in self-knowledge, courage, confidence and resiliency. Joining Camp Asbury’s favorite programs of Night Owls, Up to the Challenge and Take the Reins are two new camps for Summer 2023: Raise Your Voice and Hands On. As well as the reintroduction of some classics, Water Week and Buckeye Backpack

Horse program:  Camp Asbury partners with Sand Hill Stable in Mantua, Ohio. For Summer 2023 Camp Asbury offers Beginner II (5 stable visits per week) instruction for grades 4-7. Camp Asbury also offers a farm experience (2 stable visits with optional riding) for grades 1-4 and intermediate riding instruction for grades 8-12 (5 stable visits per week with extended hours).  Customized instruction is available at the stable for riders who demonstrate a higher skill level. Horse programs operate during four weeks of Camp Asbury’s summer program. Camp Asbury provides transportation to stable sessions. At the stable, learn to ride, control, and groom a horse. Horse program campers are asked to describe their riding experience and skill on Asbury’s “Get Acquainted” form. Each camper’s horseback ability will be confirmed by Sand Hill Stable instructors and their stable experience tailored to their ability.

Alumni: Whether you’re a former camper or an Asbury Summer Staff alum, Camp Asbury values its ongoing connection with you. You and your family are invited to share new experiences and create fresh memories at Camp Asbury. Check out Family Weekend, August 11-13, 2023 at the end of this brochure. Camp Asbury also welcomes staff alumni, trained as counselors within the last three years, to work as trained summer volunteers. Volunteers will receive special orientation to the ways Camp Asbury programs are operating in Summer 2023.

Tiered Pricing

What is Tiered Pricing?

Tiered Pricing is a personal pricing system that many summer camps across the country are now using. East Ohio Camps does careful cost analysis and works hard to keep fee increases to a minimum, while at the same time the costs to run a high-quality summer camp continue to increase.

East Ohio Camps knows and understands that families have different abilities to pay for a Christian camping experience, and that you know your family’s financial situation better than we do. This allows you to choose the rate that best fits your financial situation. The pricing option you choose remains confidential and in no way influences the experience your camper receives. Your camper receives the same quality camp experience no matter which rate you choose.

  • Tier 1 is the rate we are able to offer thanks to the contributions of the East Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church and other generous donors.
  • Tier 2 is a partially-supported rate for those who can pay more than the Tier 1 rate.
  • Tier 3 is a rate that more closely reflects the true cost of the camp experience.

What happens when you pay the Tier 2 or Tier 3 rate? You take an active role in supporting the true cost of their child’s camp experience, which enables us to redirect the contributions from our generous donors to support other areas of need in the camping ministry, including program, staffing and facility upgrades.

Please remember that in addition to these rates, additional financial assistance is available to ensure that all children have the opportunity to attend camp.

  • You can pay in multiple payments. Call the East Ohio Camps office at 1 (800) 831-3972 ext. 108 to arrange a payment plan that works for your family.
  • Take advantage of the sibling discount if more than one child from your family is attending camp. Contact the camp office at 1 (800) 831-3972 ext. 108 or email: camp@eocumc.com.
  • East Ohio Camps has Campership funds available. Contact Gary Jones at 1 (800) 831-3972 ext. 120 for an application.
  • Your church may be able to help pay part of the cost. Check with your Camp Contact Person or your Pastor for details.
  • Your district may have Campership Funds available. Check with your District Office for details.
