Meet the Year-Round Staff

Meet Asbury’s Director: John Cruz

John’s journey with Camp Asbury began long before he ever stepped into leadership. As a child, he spent his summers at camp. It was more than just a place to have fun, it also became his spiritual home, a place where he could fully be himself. From 2009-2016, John served on summer staff in various roles, including small-group counselor and in-post director. In 2022, John stepped into the role of Assistant Director after spending five years in New York City. He then became Camp Director in 2024. Today, John leads Camp Asbury wiht the same heart that once sat around its campfires as a camper, believing deeply in the power of this place to create space for God’s love to meet people exactly where they are. His leadership is rooted in the joy, healing, and transformation camp can bring.

Meet Asbury’s Food Service Manager: Pat Cupples

Pat’s story at Camp Asbury is one rooted in faithful service, steady leadership, and a deep love for people. Since joining staff in 2003 as Assistant Director, Pat has dedicated himself to creating spaces where campers and guests feel welcomed, known, and cared for. He served as Assistant Director through 2010, guiding the ministry and shaping countless camp experiences along the way. After his time as Assistant Director, Pat continued pouring into Camp Asbury, serving as Day Camp Director and Maintenance Assistant until 2019 when he transitioned into the role of Food Service Manager. Pat’s passion for camping ministry stretches beyond Camp Asbury. Over the years, he has also served at Widewater Retreat and Ministry Center and Camp Wesley within the West Ohio Conference, as well as at Pocono Plateau in the Eastern Pennsylvania United Methodist Camp and Retreat Ministry. Each place has shaped his perspective, but Camp Asbury remains home. His favorite part of working at camp is building relationships with our guests because for Pat, camp is about connecting with people to God first. Outside of camp life, Pat treasures time with his wife, Kristina, and their two sons, Colin and Cameron. Family, faith, and fellowship are at the center of his life, the same values he brings to Camp Asbury every day.

Meet Asbury’s Site Manager: Dylan John

Dylan’s journey with Camp Asbury began in true camp fashion, with a story to tell. He officially joined the Asbury staff in 2019, and his first day happened to fall during a winter snowstorm. While the snow piled high, Dylan stepped into his role without hesitation, a fitting beginning for someone who would quickly become known as the person who shows up no matter the conditions or the issue. His connection to camping ministry stretches back even further when he began volunteering for Lakeside Institute in the summer of 2012. Today, he continues to serve on Institute staff and currently serves as the Dean, investing in the next generation of leaders and campers with steady dedication. At Camp Asbury, Dylan’s favorite part of the job is simply being in nature and his favorite place on property are the spots no one ever sees. If you ask Dylan what he does at camp, he’ll give you the straightforward answer: he “fixes stuff.” From small repairs to big projects, he keeps camp running smoothly. But more than that, he helps maintain the spaces where ministry happens, ensuring cabins are ready, lights stay on, and every guest can focus on experiencing God’s creation without distraction.

Meet Asbury’s Office Manager: Anna Smith

Anna’s path to Camp Asbury was a journey of curiosity, connection, and a desire to stay active in a meaningful way. After retiring from the insurance industry, she realized she wanted a role that would keep her productive, engaged, and outside the home, so she joined our kitchen staff in 2022. Staying home might appeal to some, but Anna knew she needed something more, a place where she could make a difference and be part of a community, so when the Office Manager positioned opened up in 2025, Anna was excited for the opportunity to be more involved. Anna’s favorite part of working at camp is by far the people. She loves meeting new guests, hearing their stories, and building connections. She also loves the work environment, the supportive nature and kindness of her coworkers. Anna’s favorite place on property is the dining hall, and it’s not just because of the food. For Anna, the dining hall is where the fun, laughter, and interaction happen. Whether she’s supporting guests, helping staff, or simply being part of the lively camp atmosphere, Anna brings her enthusiasm and kindness to everything she does, making Camp Asbury a brighter, warmer place for everyone.
